Sunset at the Bridge
The view is amazing; the sun is setting, tainting the sky with orange and red as it slides towards the horizon. As the darkness closes in lights come on, spanning the length of the Golden Gate Bridge. The sight alone attracts thousands of people to this location. Today there is a man here, who has not once looked at the bridge. He sits, alone, head bowed and hands clasped as his forearms rest on his knees. He hasn’t moved for the last hour and no one has approached him, they don’t even notice him as he sits there, wallowing in his own despair.
Radek Zelenka wants to be alone.
“I’m sorry.” A voice says from behind him.
Radek lifts his head to listen.
“I really didn’t want to do this.” The voice continues.
“Evan.” Radek speaks the name with a sigh.
Evan reaches out to touch but stops himself just short of Radek’s shoulder.
“Was it punishment?” Radek asks “Because I thought we were happy together.”
“We were happy.” Evan agrees “And yes, this is more punishment than I can take.”
“It is so unfair.” Radek rubs his hands across his face, dislodging his glasses, then removing them completely, allowing them to rest in his lap.
“I know.” This time Evan allows himself to touch, but Radek does not react.
“I want to take it back. The last two weeks.”
“You can’t, Radek. You know that’s not possible.”
“I want many things I cannot have.”
“I do too. The chance to tell you I Love you would be a good place to start.”
“I want to be able to tell people what you were like out of that uniform.”
“You want to tell people what I look like naked?” Evan laughs.
“I want to be able to tell people how honorable you are, how beautiful, how you make me laugh and feel so alive.” Radek continues, ignoring Evan.
“You can do that now. Things have changed. You don’t have to hide for me anymore.”
“I want everyone to know how much I love you, without any repercussions.”
“There won’t be, I promise. No one is getting into trouble for this.” Evan gently rests his hand on Radek’s arm.
“I don’t trust the Air Force not to use my love for you to taint you in some way.”
“Radek.” And suddenly Evan has run out of words.
“There will never be anyone else.” Radek states
“You can’t hold onto me, Radek.”
“Never.” Radek puts his glasses back on.
“Radek, please. I Love you completely, but don’t do this to yourself.”
“This is it for me. You are it for me. For the rest of my life.”
“Please.” Evan begs. “Please you have to let me go.”
Radek stands, shaking slightly, his legs numb from sitting so long. Evan stands with him, facing him, hands on Radek’s shoulders.
“I will work. I will live. I will keep the city functioning. I don’t think I can love without you.” A single tear rolls down Radek’s cheek.
“You’ll find a way. You’ll find someone. Just don’t close yourself off to the possibility.” Evan reaches to wipe away the tear.
“You are not replaceable in my life.” A second tear follows the first.
“I know. But there’s still room for someone else.” Evan wraps his arms around Radek and holds him.
“I Love You.” He says. Radek takes a hesitant step forward, passing into Evan’s body as it fades to a pale yellow glow.
“I will miss you, Evan.”
Evan places a gentle kiss on Radek’s lips, hoping that he can feel it, before turning away; his body has gone and the glow rises into the night sky to join the other ascended.
