“Are you sure about this?” Nick asked. The two of them stood at the threshold of Calvin’s mother’s condo.

“Yes,” Calvin replied for what seemed like the millionth time since they began the trek to her south Florida residence. “This is the appropriate time. We both managed to get to Earth and its National Coming Out Day. Can you think of a better opportunity?”

Nick sighed “Calvin, you don’t HAVE to do it on this day just because it’s a national thing. We can wait.”

“No,” Calvin shook his head vehemently his long hair swaying as he did. “I want to do this.”

Nick squeezed his hand. “Ok, let’s do it then.”

Calvin nodded as Nick pulled away then Calvin cleared his throat and knocked loudly on the white door. A voice called ‘Coming!’ from the other side and they could hear footsteps approaching. Nora Kavanagh pulled the door open a happy smiled spreading across her face as she eyed her only son. “Calvin! You’re early,” she beamed.

“Hello mother. We made good time and the flight was early.”

She nodded still smiling. “And you must be Calvin’s friend Nick! Come in!”

Nick smiled warmly as the woman hugged them both dragging them into the small cozy abode. “Hot tea?” she asked

“Mom, it’s not really that cold out.”

She waved a hand casually. “I know dear, but it’s October. It only seems right to offer hot tea. I’m not used to this Florida climate yet. I miss Boston on these days.” She sighed heavily. “Let me go put on the kettle. I’ll be back in a jiff.” She moved to the small kitchen before they could protest. Her simple white house dress moving with her as she went.

Nick turned to Calvin his face full of a grin. “Calvin, she’s great. It’s going to be fine.”

Calvin nodded as they moved to the couch to wait for her. “Cookies?” She called out.

“That sounds good mom.” Calvin replied fingering his lip as he considered the words. Moments later she came back in with a tray of chocolate chip and peanut butter cookies. They looked home made.

“Kettles almost done, but you can start on these.” She advised sitting down the tray and taking a seat in her favorite rocker across from the two men. “So, how was your trip?” she asked.

“It was great. We didn’t have any troubles at all.” Calvin assured.

Nick nodded. “Florida is quite lovely, Ms. Kavanagh. I’ve never been down south this far.”

“Nora,” She told him with a wink.

Nick laughed. “Nora.”

“Wonderful! Will you have time to site see? Calvin didn’t say how long you’ll be visiting and since I haven’t seen him in almost two years except for the letters.” Her voice was tinged with sorrow and loneliest under false cheer.

“I’m sorry mom. I know it’s been hard.”

She smiled once again. “I understand dear. I do.”

Calvin breathed in deep as Nick smiled encouragingly. “Mom, the real reason I wanted to be here was to tell you something important.”

“Yes?”

Calvin gulped. “I’ve meet someone. I mean,” he paused. “I’m in love and it’s serious.”

Nora clapped her hands together. “That’s wonderful dear! Are you getting married? What’s her name? Are you going to be the best man?” she asked of Nick. Her words were running together toward the end as her mind visibly started piecing together all sorts of possible futures.

Calvin cringed inwardly then blurted: “Mom, its Nick.”

“It’s Nick what?” She asked unsure her eyes darting between them.

“Her is not a her. Her is a he. Nick is my partner, not just my friend. I’m gay,” he finished.

Nora’s eyes dropped to her lap as she digested the information. “I see,” she stopped words no longer able to form. “I-”

Suddenly a high pitched scream filled the void. The kettle was ready. “Excuse me. I should get that,” she whispered. Nora rose leaving the two men sitting in silence.

“Oh god,” Calvin whispered. “What did I do?”

Nick took his hand. “It’s alright; she needs to let it soak in. You knew this wasn’t going to be easy.”

“I need to go talk to her.”

“I’ll be waiting.”

Calvin stood going to the archway that separated the living room from the kitchen. He moved just inside the room the aroma of cookies assaulting him. Nora stood at the stove her back to him. “Mom?” he asked gingerly. “Are you ok?”

She turned her face red and tears streamed down her face. “I’m sorry Calvin. I just don’t know what to feel or say. I don’t know what to do.”

Calvin was across the tile floor taking her tiny frame into his arms. “I’m so sorry. I didn’t know how else-” he choked back the words. Her face was buried in his chest as she heaved, crying into his crisp dress shirt. “I never wanted to disappoint you.”

She pulled away taking his chin in her hand her face set in a no nonsense look. “Calvin you have and never will disappoint me.” She told him sternly. “If there’s anything I taught you it was tolerance of all things and accepting things that are meant to be. I’ve never been more proud of you in my life. You are apart of something so great you can’t tell me what it is and despite that, and you being gone for so long, I can’t help but feel how much you mean to me.”

Calvin smiled. “I just don’t want to let you down.”

“You won’t dear. I just-” she fought for the right thing to say. Picking up the kettle she went to the counter and poured the hot liquid into her faded, worn teapot. “This was just something I wasn’t prepared for,” she sat the kettle down. “I always knew you were special. So bright, unique and defiant.” She laughed

He laughed with her. “You mean I can be a pain in the ass.”

“That too.” She confirmed. “I just want you to be happy. If you are then that’s good enough for me. I just need time to think about this.”

Calvin nodded. “I know. Nick is the most amazing person mom. You’ll see.”

“He had better be.” She stated. “I just really wanted grandchildren.”

“That’s not out of the question.”

Nora smiled. “Thank goodness.”

Nick appeared in the archway. “Is it safe?” he asked dark eyebrows raised in a question mark.

“I do believe so.” Nora replied. “I just hope you two don’t have anymore surprises. You’ll give an old lady a heart attack.”

Nick laughed. “I don’t think so.”

“Good. Now let’s have some tea and cookies. We have lots to discuss.” She picked up the tray. “I wonder. Should I get one of those colored rainbow flags to hang outside? I should show some support don’t you think?” she asked her face a mask of consideration.

“Mom!” Calvin chuckled taking the small silver tray for her. Nick guided them both back the comfort of the living room. There was much to discuss indeed.

The End.
