Title: The Flower Shop
Pairings: Lorne/Parrish
Rating: PG
Word Count: 1447
Summary: "This is 'Parrish's Plants'. I'm David Parrish." He held his hand out.

Disclaimer: Any recognisable characters are not mine.
Notes: This doesn't quite meet the request I was given. It is an AU, and although you don't see Lorne painting, he does own a Gallery. I missed on the humour too. Sorry. Beta by [livejournal.com profile] somehowunbroken Thank you.

David looks up from his newspaper when the bell above the door to the shop rings, it’s been quiet all day and he closes in less than an hour, so he gives his full attention to his unexpected lone customer.

The man marches to the counter and plants his hands flat on the surface and leans towards David. Although David is taller than this guy and there is 4 foot of solid wooden counter between them, David cannot help but take a step away from him.

“Where the fuck are my flowers.” He demands.

“Er...” David has no idea what this guy is on about; he hasn’t had an order for flowers for delivery or collection for weeks.

“My fucking flowers!” the man shouts in his face. “Twenty mixed bouquets in vases for my gallery which opens in three hours. Where the fuck are they? You promised to deliver at 9am.”

“I... I haven’t had an order for weeks.”David stammers, he’s alone in the shop and this guy is scaring him.

“What the fuck is this?” The guy throws a crumpled piece of paper on the counter. David tentatively reaches out and smoothes it flat.

“Oh” he says. “This is for ‘Perfect Plants’ over on Mason Street.” He tries to be reasonable.

“What?” The guy stands there glaring at him

“This is ‘Parrish’s Plants’. I’m David Parrish.” He holds his hand out and the guy stares at it.

“Fucking brilliant.” He mutters and snatches the order form away. He is just at the door when David is struck by inspiration.

“I can help if you still need the flowers.” He calls, but the guy is gone, slamming the door behind him so hard the glass rattles. David takes a few calming breaths, and stands there for five minutes trying not to shake.

oooOOOooo

Forty minutes later as David is dragging the display pots in from outside someone clears their throat behind him. David turns and his heart flies into his throat, it’s the guy from earlier and he does not look happy. David glances around, suddenly feeling vulnerable without the counter to hide behind.

“Listen, I’m sorry about earlier,” he starts, and he smiles, running his hand through his hair. He doesn’t look as scary when he’s not shouting.

“I’ve been let down for the second time today, and I’m supposed to be opening my gallery tonight. I’m really sorry I yelled at you. I’m a little stressed.”

“Oh. OK. Apology accepted.” David goes back to dragging the tub through the doorway.

“Um. I don’t suppose...” David looks up as he trails off

“You said you could help with the flowers?” he looks kind of cute with that hopeful look on his face.

“Oh, yes. Yes I can.” David can’t afford to turn down a customer right now.

“Oh thank God.” The guy sighs. “I feel like such a shit for yelling at you. I should have checked the order form.” He blushes and looks away “I forgot to put my glasses on.” He confesses. David is suddenly imagining those blue eyes behind wire rimmed glasses above that smile and he has to look away.

“Need a hand with those?” He offers.

“Oh, that’s really not necessary.” David says but the guy has rolled his sleeves up and is lugging a pot along the pavement. David stares at the muscles in his arms, and then quickly looks away again, before he is caught; customer, he admonishes himself.

It takes a third of the time it usually takes David to bring everything in from outside, this guy is seriously fit and has done most of the work. David doesn’t care if it’s out of guilt for shouting at him earlier, he’s still going to charge him full price on the flowers.

“Why don’t you tell me what you need for your gallery Mr...” David asks.

“Oh. Lorne. Evan Lorne.” He holds his hand out and David shakes it, ignoring the little tingle he gets from touching him. Mr. Lorne doesn’t let go straight away and they stand there staring at each other. David’s eyes widen slightly as he watches him carefully lick his lips.

“You should call me Evan.” Evan says looking right at David.

Oh crap. David can feel himself adding a discount to the flowers for no reason. He tries to bring some order back into the moment.

“The flowers?” he prompts.

“Oh yeah.” Evan blushes. “The flowers.”

Evan goes on to explain that he ordered twenty mixed bouquets to place around the gallery, only ‘Perfect Plants’ has let him down. David takes Evan through to the stock room, and although he doesn’t have that many display vases on hand, he does find eight matching pedestals to make up the deficit. Evan is delighted with David’s idea of using trailing greenery to disguise the pot and pedestal.

While Evan is picking out flowers from what David has available, David cannot help but make conversation with him. When Evan mentions that the waiting staff have also let him down, David opens his mouth and volunteers his friends.

“What?” Evan asks, laughing, “You can’t just offer your friends like that.”

“No I can, they’re both just out of the military, they don’t have any work. They’ll do pretty much anything for quick cash.” David pauses. “You will pay them, right?” he asks.

“Of course.” And Evan stands there open mouthed as David picks up the phone and calls some help.

Ten minutes later David has secured two waiters for the evening, Jason Markham and Will Stackhouse. They’re given directions to the gallery and promise to turn up in their best pressed suits and polite smiles.

David looks nervously at Evan, swallowing before opening what could potentially be Pandora’s box.

“They’re.. um.. a couple. That won’t be a problem will it?” David wonders if Evan will suddenly not be quite so desperate for waiters and if he will have to call Will back and think of a non offensive excuse.

“Not at all.” And Evan looks him right in the eye and carefully puts his hand on David’s forearm. Oh thinks David, and smiles at Evan.

“You didn’t have to do that.” Evan says his hand still on David’s arm.

“Oh, I wanted to help.” They stand there grinning at each other until the moment is shattered by the shrill ringing of the Star Trek theme. Evan digs his cell phone out of his pocket.

“Yeah Mom.” he answers it.

“Yes, I’ve got flowers... and two waiters... no I didn’t pick up bums off the street... mother!” Evan grins at David and continues his one sided conversation while David arranges the flowers in the vases, trying to make them all look the same.

“See I told you it would be fine.”

David continues to eavesdrop on Evan’s conversation.

“No actually I don’t.” Evan has stopped pacing and has turned away from David. He whispers into the phone but David still manages to hear

“I have someone right here I want to ask.”

David pauses,Is Evan talking about him?

“Mom” Evan whines into the phone. “You do not need to talk to him. I can ask on my own.” David looks up and Evan is watching him. Evan flushes beet red and snaps the phone shut, cutting off the call.

“Star Trek, huh?” David tries to lighten the mood; as cute as Evan looks when he’s flushing, David doesn’t want him to be so embarrassed he won’t ask whatever it is his supposed to ask. David isn’t stupid, he’s hoping he needs to get his own suit out tonight, that there’s a date on the horizon, but he’s made mistakes in the past and doesn’t want to get his hopes up.

“How much do I owe you for the flowers?” Evan blurts.

“Oh.” See, thinks David; he only wants your flowers.

“It’s just that I’m about to make an idiot of myself, so I figured I should pay for the flowers before you chase me out of your shop.” Evan has his wallet out.

“What?” David has lost the flow of the conversation, or missed part of it in his disappointment.

“I’m going to ask you to be my date tonight.” Evan says, not quite making eye contact. “So I thought I’d pay for the flowers before you turn me down and break my ...” he stops speaking suddenly.

“Heart?” David finishes for him.

“Yeah.” Evan shuffles his feet.

“I’d be honored to accompany you to the opening of your gallery Mr. Lorne” David says formally.

“Really?” Evan asks surprised

“Really.” David states.

Evan’s smile lights up the room, and David falls a little in love with him right there.

Forget my request, I love this just as it is.

Lorne as a gallery owner is a great idea - don't think I've ever seen that before. It's kind of scary Lorne's mother sounds like she could be me, because I would make a call like that to my either of my sons. Star Trek ring tone - *grin*.
Poor David - hasn't had an order in weeks and then adds a discount - for no reason.

This made me feel good, which is exactly what I wanted in a fic. Thanks very much!!

(P.S. I wouldn't be averse to reading more in this universe. If you ever do another exchange and get me, feel free to ignore the request and do more of this)

Lovely AU! Very believable for the two of them. Love the call between Evan and his Mom. Really like how you included some of the other boys in this as well. :D

Would enjoy seeing more of this universe if you are so inclined.
