“Am I going to get the silent treatment for the rest of the day?” Calvin asked eyeing the life signs detector again for what seemed like the millionth time.

Nick didn’t look at the scientist then said: “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

Calvin looked at Nick in profile as they walked down the path. “Right. You haven’t said more then five words to me all morning.”

Nick shrugged. “Maybe I don’t feel like talking.”

Calvin visibly sighed. This was going to be harder then all get out. He knew why Nick was mad. He had good reason, but his pouting was going to ruin everything. “So this is just a hot flash, PMS, or something then?” he replied in jest.

Nick turned to him. “Do you know what day it is?

Calvin thought a moment. “The fourteenth?”

Nick looked at him expectantly. “And?”

“Meatloaf in the mess?”

Nick’s eyes narrowed. “Just let it go, ok? I’m not mad.”

Calvin pursed his lips together. He wanted to tell Nick right then, but he was still holding onto the hope his plan would work. He fingered the chain in his pocket, then released it letting it drop deeper into his pocket. He put the life signs detector down and pulled his laptop from its case. “There’s nothing here but us and the two grunts at the gate.”

Nick nodded. He was glad he had told the two airmen to wait at the gate. He sure didn’t want them to hear the pair of them bicker. The men were well within shouting distance if needed be.

“I’m going to look around.”

“Fine,” Nick replied leaning against a tree stump.

Calvin walked the perimeter of the small clearing they had been checking absently reading his laptop. In a flash his legs slipped down into soft dirt. “What th-” The words didn’t make it out of his mouth as he yelped instead his laptop sailing as his legs, then torso, slid below the black earth. “Nick!” he managed to yell as he disappeared below the surface.

Nick ran to the spot Calvin had vanished at. “Calvin!?” He studied the small spot of soft dirt. Quick sand? It didn’t look like it. Just dirt. “Help!” he shouted hoping the two airmen would appear. One ran up to him quickly.

“Sir?” he asked unsure.

“Grab my feet. I’m going down there. Dr. Kavanagh was sucked under.”

The airman looked skeptical. “Sir?” he repeated.

“Just do it!” Nick yelled tossing his P-90 aside his leaned at the edge of the round man hole shaped area. “Give it a 15 count then pull us up.” The airman grabbed his legs as Nick took a deep breath diving into the hole half his body sinking below.

Seconds ticked by as the airman counted the numbers out loud. At mentally clicked off the last number he started to pull. The pit resisted. He pulled all his weight back as he could feel the Major coming out. He yanked harder backing as he went. Slowly Nick resurfaced. Nick gasped for breath as his mouth hit the fresh air. Nick’s hand gripped tightly on the scientist as they came both were expelled from the depths of the pit.

Calvin wasn’t breathing. Nick laid next to the long haired man his eyes darting wildly over the face of his lover. He turned to the airman. “Get back to the gate, radio for medical help.”

The airman’s hesitation was gone as he sprinted back to the gate.

Nick held the unconscious man. He knew he had to do something or he would lose him. He began CPR. “Don’t you die on me,” he told the scientist.

Calvin jumped his body rigid as he coughed, dark soil spewing from his mouth as it spilled from his throat. His body racked with effort as his lungs begged for air. Nick almost cried. “Thank god! Calvin? Are you ok? Can you hear me?”

Calvin looked up into Nick’s eyes. “I’m sorry,” he whispered hoarsely.

Nick smiled. “It’s ok. I needed something to wake me up anyway. This mission was getting boring.”

Calvin shook his head. “No, I mean, I’m sorry I didn’t say it this morning. I wanted to surprise you.”

Nick closed his eyes feeling foolish. “I was being an ass over it.”

“It’s your birthday. I should have said it anyway. I wanted to do something special.” Calvin pulled the chain with the dog tag shaped charm. “I had this made; I was going to give it to you tonight.”

Nick took the chain eyeing the engraving. ‘Happy Birthday, Love Calvin’

“Happy birthday!” Calvin said coughing again. “This wasn’t how I imagined this would go off.”

Nick leaned over holding Calvin close. “I’m sorry Cal. When we get back to Atlantis, I’ll make up for this.”

Calvin smiled. “It’s your birthday. Shouldn’t I be making the amends? When can make it a theme. How about fourteen makeup positions?”

“We’ll both make amends with some makeup sex. You just need to get better first.”

Calvin nodded as they heard the shouts and diluded voices coming from down the path. The cavalry was coming.
